OK, there was this weird buzzing noise in the Thanksgiving tips show we just recorded, so I wanted to share with you a show we did last year on the subject:

Rick and Eric talk about the How To Make Gravy for Thanksgiving video that Eric made with Chef Erica Wides. The price of Thanksgiving turkeys drops around the holidays, and Eric talks about why that happens. Rick asks why turkey is just a once or twice a year food. Turkeys provide an economical way to have several meals from one bird.

Eric talks about the podcasting podcast he has been listening to by Libsyn, and it ends up Eric and the Libsyn podcast host, Elsie, have a mutual friend in Natasha, who Eric knows from the food coop.

We then move on to talking about how to make gravy, and how one has to cook out the water from the stock, water and wine, then you add in the flour. One has to keep in mind that this can take longer than you think.

Rick likes the recent roof repair video Eric did using roof tar, and we point out how permanent roof tar can be when it gets on your hands or your clothes.

Eric found a new podcast, Jack's Farm Radio, that he likes. The host of the show, Daniel will be on our show soon.

Rick and Eric talk about the previous podcast about how to build a hoop house. Matt came on the show to tell us how he is building a hoop house greenhouse.

Viewer Mail and Baking Powder end the show.

Cheri from the YouTube channel Flannel Acres joins me to talk. A recent video she did on how to can grapes was interesting, as I had never thought about canning grapes.

We talk about whether you need to boil the lids or heat up the jars, and using a pressure canner to can meat and low acid vegetables.

Cold Frame Hoop Houses, aka low tunnels, are a great way to extend your growing season. The thermatic crawl space vents we talk about you can get at your local home improvement store or online: http://amzn.to/1LBhube

We move onto borrowing tools, always return tools cleaner than you got them.

Then we talk about how to get rid of mice, and rats if you have them.

Here is the vacuum we talked about last week: http://amzn.to/1G7ImTl

Erin joins us to talk about the lost art of letter writing, she is reading Dear Friend and Gardener, a collection of letters between two friends. We ponder whether we have friends to write to, and then what are their mailing addresses? We touch on Mail Art, which Eric has created over the years. Love the photocopier.

Is summer over? Erin thinks this winter will be mild because of the El Nino patterns. Despite being on the coast of Lake Michigan, she hopes less snow. We'll see. Erin is getting a new iPhone, and this starts a conversation on waiting in line for new phones, and then waiting in line at a restaurant.

Which brings us to diners. Eric has a fondness for the Waffle House, their super friendly staff and the neat system they have for tagging which dishes get what food as it is prepared. GardenFork loves diners. agreed. Eric has the Collins Diner near him in Canaan, CT . Do you have a favorite diner? Let us know in the comments below.

When is frost coming near you? Eric needs to maintain his weather station provided by Allison House. If you want to extend your season, you can build one of our hoop houses. We geek out for a minute as Eric has been tweaking the website to load faster. Eric has mirrored all the images for the site onto Amazon's Cloud service. We then go off on a tangent about computer security. We talk about our video on natural weed control, we filmed this at our neighbor's house, they have a really nice garden. Erin uses comfrey as a mulch around tomatoes, and makes a tea out of the leaves as well.
